Gorakhpur MBBS Student Expelled After Failing First Year for 11 Years; NMC Rules in Focus

A student at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur has been expelled after remaining in the first year of his MBBS course for an unprecedented 11 years. Admitted in 2014 under the SC quota, the student, nicknamed “Daroga” on campus, reportedly appeared for his first-year examinations only once, failing all papers.

Following this initial failure, he stopped attempting the exams altogether, despite repeated offers of special academic assistance and counseling from faculty members. The college administration finally took action, ordering him to vacate his hostel room as his prolonged presence was deemed disruptive to other students.

The student has attributed his inability to appear for exams to long-term mental health issues, including stress and depression. This unusual case has created a complex regulatory situation for the college authorities.

While current NMC guidelines strictly limit students to four attempts to clear the first-year exam and mandate course completion within nine years, this student was admitted under previous Medical Council of India (MCI) rules. This discrepancy has led the college principal to refer the matter to the institution’s academic committee and seek further guidance from the NMC on the appropriate course of action in this regulatory “grey area.”
