IGMC Shimla Doctor Terminated After Video of Him Punching A Patient Goes Viral
A Senior Resident doctor at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla, identified as Dr. Raghav Narula, was initially suspended and subsequently terminated after a video of him assaulting a patient went viral. The incident, which occurred on December 22, 2025, involved the doctor repeatedly punching a patient, Arjun Singh, in the face while he was lying on a hospital bed.
The altercation reportedly escalated after the patient, who was recovering from a bronchoscopy, objected to the doctor addressing him informally as “tu” and asked for more polite communication.
Following the circulation of the video, which sparked widespread outrage and protests by the patient’s relatives, the hospital administration acted swiftly. A preliminary inquiry led to the doctor’s immediate suspension. The patient, who suffered a nasal injury during the assault, filed a police complaint, resulting in the registration of an FIR against the doctor.
The incident drew sharp criticism from the Himachal Pradesh Health Minister and the public, highlighting concerns over patient safety and professional conduct in medical institutions.
In the latest update as of December 24, 2025, the Himachal Pradesh government has terminated the services of Dr. Narula with immediate effect. The decision was based on a report by a detailed inquiry committee, which concluded that while both parties were responsible for the escalation, the doctor’s behavior amounted to serious misconduct and was “unbecoming of a public servant” under the Resident Doctor Policy-2025.
The inquiry noted that the patient also engaged in the physical altercation, but the severity of the doctor’s actions warranted his removal from the post.
