IMS BHU Surgery Resident Attempts Suicide: 25-Year-Old Doctor in Critical Condition

The medical community is once again confronting the devastating reality of toxic residency cultures. A 25-year-old first-year postgraduate (PGY-1) resident doctor from the General Surgery Department at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS BHU), is currently battling for her life in the ICU following a tragic suicide attempt.

The Incident: An Overdose of Insulin

According to ground reports and local police, the incident occurred around midnight on Thursday, March 12. The young doctor, who is recognized by her peers as a brilliant academic and a gold medalist, allegedly injected herself with over 100 units of insulin.

The tragedy came to light when a worried friend, unable to reach her, visited her rented accommodation near Samne Ghat. Finding the door locked from the inside with no response, the friend alerted the police. Authorities broke open the door and found the doctor lying unconscious.

Current Medical Status

She was immediately rushed to the trauma center and later shifted to the ICU of the Super Speciality Block at BHU. Medical officers attending to her revealed that the massive insulin overdose has severely compromised her kidneys, necessitating emergency dialysis. As of today, she remains in a coma, intubated, and on full ventilator support. Dr. S. N. Sankhwar, Director of IMS BHU, confirmed the incident and stated that her family has been informed.

The Root Cause: Institutional Toxicity?

While the police are conducting a formal investigation, messages circulating among resident doctors and social media platforms point to a singular, deeply disturbing cause: extreme departmental toxicity and harassment.

This tragic event has reignited urgent, nationwide conversations about the brutal working conditions, mental abuse, and relentless pressure placed on first-year residents. The medical fraternity is demanding strict accountability from the institution, asking a painful question: How many more brilliant doctors must we lose to a toxic system?
