List of 7 Medical Colleges Fined ₹1 Crore by NMC Over Intern Stipends
In a major regulatory crackdown, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has imposed a massive penalty of ₹1 crore each on seven medical colleges across the country.
As per the official notice issued by the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) on March 12, 2026, this severe action was taken because these institutions blatantly failed to disclose the mandatory stipend details for their MBBS interns and postgraduate medical residents on their official websites.
The Penalized Medical Colleges
The NMC’s official notice targets both government and private institutions that failed to comply with the transparency mandate. The seven penalized colleges are:
Government Institutes:
1. Dumka Medical College, Dumka (Jharkhand)
2. Government Medical College, Barmer (Rajasthan)
3. Government Medical College, Ongole (Andhra Pradesh)
4. Pt. B.D. Sharma Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak (Haryana)
Private Institutes:
5. Akash Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Devanahalli, Bangalore (Karnataka)
6. RKDF Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh)
7. Prasad Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh)
Is It Just an Eyewash?
While a ₹1 crore fine sounds severe, many within the medical fraternity are highly critical of the move. According to statements given to the media by prominent RTI activists, this penalty is merely an “eyewash.” The colleges are being fined for hiding their stipend data, but there is still no concrete action being taken against colleges that are simply not paying their residents.
With the Supreme Court constantly pulling up the NMC for dragging its feet on this issue, interns and PG residents continue to work grueling 48-hour shifts without the financial compensation that is legally owed to them. The NMC has warned these colleges that continued non-compliance could lead to the suspension of their admissions, but for exhausted junior doctors, these warnings feel like too little, too late.
