NMC Withdraws Permission for Vaishno Devi Medical College (SMVDIME); 50 Students to be Shifted

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially withdrawn the “Letter of Permission” (LoP) granted to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) in Kakryal, J&K, effectively de-recognizing its MBBS course for the 2025-26 session.

The decision came after a surprise inspection by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on January 2, 2026, which revealed “gross and substantial” deficiencies. The inspection found a 39% shortage in teaching faculty, a 65% shortage in resident doctors, and critically low bed occupancy in the hospital, which failed to meet the minimum standards required for medical education.

To protect the careers of the 50 students who had already secured admission and started their course in November 2025, the NMC has ordered a safety net. These students will not lose their academic year; instead, they will be transferred to other government medical colleges within Jammu & Kashmir.

They will be accommodated under “supernumerary seats” (extra seats created specifically for them) so that the intake capacity of the receiving colleges is not disturbed.
