The Death of a “Noble” Profession? 91% of Doctors Regret Choosing Medicine
In a stark revelation that raises serious questions about the future of India’s healthcare workforce, a new study has found that a staggering 91.4% of Indian doctors would actively advise their children against entering the medical profession.
The comprehensive survey, conducted by the Debabrata Mitalee Auro Foundation over a six-month period, polled more than 1,200 physicians across both metropolitan centers and smaller tier-2 cities. The results point to a deep-seated professional disillusionment that is causing many practitioners to reconsider their long-term commitment to clinical practice.
What is Driving the Disillusionment?
The data highlights a convergence of severe systemic pressures weighing heavily on doctors today:
• The Threat of Violence: A constant fear of verbal or physical assault from patients and their families was cited as a primary stressor. Many doctors reported that they no longer feel safe in their own clinics or hospital wards.
• Medico-Legal Anxiety: An overwhelming majority of practitioners indicated that they practice “defensive medicine” out of fear of litigation, noting that the rise in medico-legal complaints has stripped the joy and clinical autonomy from their daily work.
• Severe Clinical Burnout: Exhausting schedules, high patient volumes, and an overall lack of work-life balance are pushing doctors to the brink of physical and mental exhaustion.
• Erosion of Public Trust: Most doctors surveyed believe that the public perception of the medical profession has drastically worsened in recent years, leaving them feeling undervalued and entirely unprotected by institutional systems.
When compared to global trends, the findings suggest that the distress faced by Indian doctors is significantly sharper than that of their international peers, signaling an urgent need for systemic reforms, better security, and stronger legal protections for healthcare workers.
