The FMG Trap: NMC Warns Students About Fake Foreign MBBS Degrees

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has just dropped a massive red flag for Indian students planning to pursue their medical degrees abroad. In a strict public advisory issued on April 1, 2026, the apex body officially warned aspirants against falling into the “FMG Trap” – specifically targeting fraudulent agents and non-compliant medical universities in Uzbekistan.

The Core Issue: FMGL 2021 Violations

According to the NMC, several foreign institutions are aggressively recruiting Indian students while completely failing to meet the mandatory standards set by the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021.

The Indian Embassy in Tashkent flagged several serious issues on the ground, including:

• Overcrowding: Colleges are illegally admitting students far beyond their approved intake capacity, completely destroying the quality of education.

• Language Barriers: Despite promising an “English medium” curriculum, many classes are being taught in local languages, leaving Indian students struggling to grasp complex medical concepts.

• Zero Clinical Exposure: Due to the overcrowding, students are receiving almost no practical, hands-on clinical training or hospital exposure.

The Universities Under Scrutiny

The NMC specifically named four institutions that are currently under the scanner: Bukhara State Medical Institute, Samarkand State Medical University, Tashkent State Medical University, and the TIT Institute of Medical Sciences (an unapproved offshore campus operating in Bangalore).

The “No NEET Required” Scam

The commission strongly urged parents and students to stop relying on admission agents who promise guaranteed medical seats without qualifying the NEET-UG exam.

The NMC reminded aspirants that if they graduate from a foreign university that does not strictly adhere to the FMGL 2021 rules – which mandate a minimum 54-month course duration, English medium instruction, and a mandatory 12-month internship at the exact same foreign university – they will be permanently disqualified from taking the licensing exam and practicing medicine in India.
