Top Delhi Medical Colleges, Including AIIMS, Fail ‘Drug-Free Campus’ Audit: RTI
A glaring compliance gap has emerged in the national capital’s medical education sector, with an RTI reply revealing that none of Delhi’s top 10 medical colleges have submitted the mandatory “Action Taken Report” (ATR) regarding substance abuse prevention. Despite strict directives under the government’s “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” to curb drug abuse among students, premier institutes have reportedly failed to document their on-ground measures.
The list of non-compliant institutions includes India’s most prestigious names, such as AIIMS Delhi, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), and Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC).
The NMC had previously mandated the formation of “Anti-Drug Squads” and vigilance committees in hostels to monitor and prevent substance use. However, the RTI data suggests that these top-tier institutes have either not formed these bodies or have failed to report their activities to the regulatory authorities.
This administrative lapse raises serious concerns about student welfare, given the rising reports of stress-induced substance abuse within the medical community. While the NMC has threatened strict action against colleges that ignore anti-ragging and anti-drug norms, the lack of data from Delhi’s leading colleges indicates a potential blind spot in enforcing safety protocols in high-pressure medical campuses.
