The horrific incident occurred at approximately 9:30 PM on the Mohaddipur-Kauwabagh Overbridge in Gorakhpur. Akash Pandey, originally from Sant Kabir Nagar, had spent the evening celebrating Holi and having dinner at a friend’s house. He was riding his scooter back to his medical college hostel when the crash happened.

According to police reports, the speeding Fortuner was being driven aggressively on the wrong side of the road when it rammed into Pandey’s scooter, along with several other two-wheelers. The sheer force of the collision was catastrophic. The young medical student was thrown nearly 15 meters through the air. He struck the railing of the overbridge, where he tragically remained suspended for roughly 30 minutes before police and emergency services arrived on the scene. Passersby alerted authorities, and he was rushed to the district hospital, but doctors declared him dead. The crash also left two other individuals seriously injured, with a fourth person sustaining minor injuries.

The driver initially fled the scene of the accident. However, by utilizing local CCTV footage, police swiftly traced the SUV’s registration number. The accused, identified as local property dealer Golden Sahni, was tracked down and arrested. Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Abhinav Tyagi confirmed that the black Toyota Fortuner has been seized, and Sahni has been officially booked under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, alongside other relevant sections. Tyagi has assured that strict legal action will be taken against the accused.
