Himachal Resident Doctors Stipend Hike: Salary Up to ₹1.3 Lakh, Duty Hours Capped at 12

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a comprehensive package aimed at reforming medical education and healthcare delivery in the state. The policy focuses on financial incentives, improved work-life balance for doctors, and significant infrastructure upgrades. The most notable changes are a massive hike in stipends for resident doctors and a strict cap on duty hours.

Key Highlights of the Announcement

1. Major Stipend Hike (Effective Next Budget)

PG Resident Doctors:

  • 1st Year: Increased to ₹50,000
  • 2nd Year: Increased to ₹60,000
  • 3rd Year: Increased to ₹65,000

Senior Residents (SRs):

• General Departments: Increased from ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 (1 Lakh) per month.

• Super-Specialty Departments: Increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.3 Lakh per month.

2. Work-Life Balance Reforms

• Duty Hour Cap: In a significant move to address burnout, the government has capped duty hours for resident doctors at a maximum of 12 hours.

The cap on duty hours is a critical patient safety measure. Exhausted doctors are more prone to errors. By limiting shifts to 12 hours, the state is aligning with global best practices for medical training and patient safety, which should lead to better clinical outcomes.

These changes are set to be implemented in the next budget. While this promises relief, it also means the financial benefits will not be immediate in the current month but are a fiscal commitment for the upcoming financial year.
