JIPMER Inquiry Finds Senior Professor Guilty of Physically Harassing Resident Doctors

In high-level inquiry committee at the prestigious JIPMER, Puducherry, has found a senior faculty member from the Department of General Medicine guilty of harassing Junior Residents.

The probe was initiated after multiple students lodged complaints alleging that the professor used archaic and abusive teaching methods, including physical aggression (such as twisting ears, poking with pens, and punching abdomens) and verbal intimidation.

The inquiry report, which has now been submitted to the administration, validated the residents’ claims that the professor created a “toxic” environment by threatening to fail them in their practical exams if they did not comply. Such a finding against a senior professor is rare in Indian medical colleges.

The committee has recommended strict “corrective action,” signaling a zero-tolerance approach to faculty misconduct that jeopardizes the mental health of postgraduate trainees.
