Missing Medical Student Found Begging on Mumbai Footpath, Reunited With Family

A routine police drive in Mumbai to rehabilitate street dwellers took an extraordinary and emotional turn last week. What started as a standard procedure ended in a miraculous rescue, as a young man found begging on a footpath was identified as a missing medical student from the Nanded district.

The Discovery on SV Road

The remarkable chain of events unfolded on Thursday, May 21, 2026. While rounding up beggars from SV Road in Malad, Police Constable Komalsingh Jadhav spotted a disoriented young man in his twenties. Recognizing his severe distress and inability to communicate coherently, Jadhav brought him to the Malad police station.

Instead of processing him as a routine case, the police team chose deep empathy, providing him with a hot meal and a bath. Once calm, Sub-Inspector Manisha Kagalkar gently questioned him. As the fog of trauma lifted, the youth identified himself as Abhay, a third-year homeopathy medical student from Tamsa in Maharashtra’s Nanded district.

Mental Health Crisis and Reunion

Abhay revealed that he had been battling a pre-existing mental health condition. Approximately a month and a half ago, he left his home without informing anyone. During a train journey to Mumbai, his bag containing his money and a piece of paper with his family’s contact details was stolen. Stranded, confused, and unable to recall phone numbers due to his mental state, the aspiring doctor turned to begging just to survive.

Working swiftly, Mumbai Police contacted the Tamsa police, who confirmed an active missing person’s complaint matching his description. The police immediately dialed his father, a teacher, who along with Abhay’s older brother (a government hospital doctor), had been frantically searching for him. Following a quick photo verification, the family rushed to Mumbai, culminating in a tearful and emotional reunion at the Malad police station late Thursday night.
