Health Ministry directed NMC to ensure Equal Stipend for ALL Interns
The Union Health Ministry has directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to ensure stipend parity for undergraduate medical interns across both government and private institutions.
Currently, a significant disparity exists: while government interns earn between ₹20,000 and ₹30,000 per month, private medical interns often receive half that amount or nothing, despite working similar hours.
This directive aims to resolve contradictions between the vague 2021 CRMI regulations and the 2023 PG regulations, which explicitly mandate equal pay.
Following persistent advocacy from associations like FAIMA, FORDA, and activist Dr. KV Babu, the Ministry has asked the NMC to amend its regulations. This move signals a major victory for thousands of private interns who have long demanded financial equality.
But the real question is “when will this happen?”
