Mumbai Medical College Ragging: Student Allegedly Forced to Offer Namaz; Two Suspended
A controversial ragging incident was reported at a private medical college in the Palghar district near Mumbai, where a first-year physiotherapy student alleged she was harassed by a senior.
According to the complaint, the student was stopped in the hostel corridor and coerced into offering namaz (Islamic prayers) against her will. The incident sparked significant tension on campus and led to protests by local groups.
In response to the allegations and the subsequent filing of an FIR, the college administration took immediate disciplinary action.
A teacher and the hostel warden were suspended for alleged negligence in preventing the incident. Police launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage and questioning students to identify the accused, who reportedly had her face covered during the confrontation.
Palghar Superintendent of Police (SP) Yatish Deshmukh visited the campus to review the situation.
“We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act. We are scanning the CCTV footage and recording statements of other students to identity the accused,” SP Deshmukh said, adding that strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
