Dr. Rashmi Verma Suicide Case: Health Ministry Intervenes, High-Level Probe Ordered at AIIMS BHOPAL
Dr. Rashmi Verma, an Assistant Professor in the Emergency and Trauma Department at AIIMS Bhopal, passed away on January 5, 2026. She succumbed to her condition after battling for life for nearly 24 days in the Intensive Care Unit, where she had been on ventilator support since December 11, 2025. Her death occurred at approximately 11:00 AM on a Monday, and her body was handed over to her family after necessary legal and administrative formalities were completed.
Dr. Verma was admitted to the hospital following a suicide attempt in which she injected herself with a high dose of an anesthetic agent (reportedly around 100ml) at her home. Although doctors were initially able to restore her heartbeat via CPR, she suffered a “global hypoxic brain injury” due to a prolonged lack of oxygen to the brain. This severe brain damage prevented her recovery despite continuous expert supervision and intervention over the subsequent three weeks.
While police recovered a suicide note in which Dr. Verma claimed responsibility for her actions and absolved others of blame, other reports suggest workplace stressors may have played a role. Sources indicate she had been upset regarding administrative pressures and had received repeated notices prior to the incident.
Following the event, the Union Health Ministry intervened, leading to the removal of Dr. Yunus, Head of the Emergency Department, from his post and the formation of a fact-finding team by AIIMS management to investigate the matter.
