BJ Medical College Ahmedabad: 19-Year-Old MBBS Student Found Dead, Calls Herself a ‘Failure’ in Suicide Note

The severe mental health crisis and silent struggles within Indian medical colleges have claimed another bright life. A first-year MBBS student at the prestigious BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad died by suicide on Monday afternoon, leaving behind a heartbreaking note.

The Incident

According to reports, 19-year-old Jiya Daki was found hanging in her room at the Devi Girls’ Hostel in Shahibaug. When she failed to attend her Monday classes and no movement was noticed in her room, the college authorities were alerted, leading to the tragic discovery.

Originally from Keshod in Junagadh, the student had moved into the hostel about five months ago. The Shahibaug police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter under Inspector J.H. Sindhav.

“A Failure”

During the search of her room, police recovered a diary containing a three-page handwritten note addressed to her parents. In the note, Jiya called herself “a failure” and expressed deep feelings of loneliness, writing that she was unable to make friends. She explicitly stated she did not blame anyone else for her decision.

Police noted that friends described her as an introvert who struggled silently to connect with her peers. Importantly, the inspector confirmed that no university exams were recently held or scheduled in the near future, ruling out immediate academic exam pressure.

College Administration Shocked

The college authorities expressed sheer disbelief over the tragedy. Jiya had cracked the highly competitive NEET-UG exam with exceptional scores to secure her merit seat at BJ Medical College. Officials noted that she was a diligent student who rarely ever skipped a class. “It is surprising that a girl who scored so well in NEET called herself a failure,” the college authorities stated.

Her roommate and classmates are being questioned by the police to better understand the circumstances leading to the incident
