RG Kar Victim’s Mother Ratna Debnath Wins Panihati Assembly Seat

In a deeply emotional and historic political upset, Ratna Debnath – the mother of the young doctor tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024 – has emerged as a massive victor in the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.

Dismantling a 15-Year Hold

Contesting on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, Debnath secured a commanding lead of 28,836 votes in the Panihati constituency of North 24 Parganas, effectively decimating the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had held the seat uninterrupted since 2011. She successfully defeated TMC candidate Tirthankar Ghosh in an urban-industrial belt that witnessed a record-breaking 91.70% voter turnout.

Throughout her campaign, Debnath avoided traditional policy debates, instead framing the election as “The Citizen vs. The System”. Her campaign phrase, “My daughter’s tragedy could have happened to anyone,” resonated deeply with voters, turning the local election into a statewide referendum on women’s safety and judicial accountability. Despite facing alleged harassment and intimidation by rival party workers on polling day, the resulting “silent voting” propelled her to a sweeping victory.

A Hope for Workplace Safety

For the medical fraternity and citizens alike, her victory represents much more than a political shift; it is a beacon of hope for systemic change. By stepping into the legislative assembly, there is a profound hope that she will set a powerful example, championing strict laws and infrastructural reforms to ensure that women will finally be safe in their workplaces. The public is looking toward her leadership to enforce the protections necessary to prevent any other family from enduring the tragedy that befell hers
