Andhra Medical College: Associate Professor Suspended Over abuse, Sexual Harassment allegations

In a major administrative crackdown on toxic residency environments, the Director of Medical Education (DME) of Andhra Pradesh has suspended Dr. K. Janardhan Rao, an Associate Professor of General Surgery at Andhra Medical College (AMC) in Visakhapatnam. The suspension comes in the wake of severe allegations of misconduct, abuse of authority, and sexual harassment raised by postgraduate (PG) medical students.

The Complaints and Investigation

The disciplinary action was initiated after several PG students at AMC submitted formal complaints against the faculty member. The medicos alleged that Dr. Rao routinely subjected them to intense mental and verbal harassment, misusing his position of power within the department. Crucially, the complaints also included grave allegations of sexual harassment brought forward by female postgraduate students.

Taking immediate cognizance of the situation, the college administration constituted an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) under the leadership of AMC Principal Dr. Sandhya Devi. The ICC conducted a thorough inquiry into the allegations and submitted its detailed findings to the administration on June 16, 2026.

Suspension Orders Issued

Based on the overwhelming complaints and the damning report submitted by the ICC, the DME concluded that there were sufficient grounds for strict disciplinary action. Exercising powers under Rule 8(1) of the Andhra Pradesh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1991, the DME ordered Dr. Rao’s immediate suspension pending further inquiry.

During his suspension period, Dr. Rao’s headquarters will remain in Visakhapatnam, and he is strictly prohibited from leaving without prior permission from competent authorities. The disciplinary proceedings are expected to continue as the administration further examines the inquiry findings.
