BJ Medical College Ahmedabad: 3 Orthopaedic Doctors Suspended for Ragging

The pervasive issue of toxicity and harassment in medical institutions has resurfaced, this time at the prominent B.J. Medical College (BJMC) in Ahmedabad. The college administration has taken firm disciplinary action by suspending three resident doctors from the Orthopaedics department following serious allegations of ragging directed at their junior colleagues.

Zero Tolerance for Harassment

The strict administrative action was initiated after junior resident doctors came forward with formal complaints detailing the alleged harassment by their seniors. While the specific details of the ordeal have been kept confidential pending the ongoing inquiry, the allegations were severe enough to warrant immediate intervention.

Acting on the strict, zero-tolerance anti-ragging policies mandated by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the institutional Anti-Ragging Committee at BJMC swiftly took cognizance of the complaints. According to an order issued by the Gujarat Health Department on Wednesday, one of the second-year PG students has been suspended for one year, while the other two have been suspended for six months each.

A Broader Systemic Issue

This incident at BJMC Ahmedabad highlights the ongoing struggle to eradicate the deeply ingrained culture of “seniority” and ragging within postgraduate medical departments, particularly in high-stress surgical branches like Orthopaedics. Medical education authorities continue to urge junior doctors to report any instances of mental or physical harassment to institutional committees or directly to the NMC’s national anti-ragging cell.
