1st-Year MS Surgery Resident Found Dead in Hyderabad Hostel: Family Alleges Ragging and Harassment

The dark cloud of extreme stress and toxic hierarchy in Indian medical colleges has claimed another life this week. A first-year postgraduate medical student was found dead in his hostel room on Thursday morning, April 16, at Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, sparking immediate protests from his family, who allege severe harassment by senior doctors.

The Incident

According to police reports, Dr. K. Suresh, a 26-year-old resident who had joined the MS (General Surgery) program just three months ago, was found unresponsive in his room at the hostel attached to Osmania General Hospital on Thursday morning.

When he did not answer calls or respond to knocks, his fellow students grew suspicious and broke open the door. He was found lying unconscious on his bed and was rushed to the casualty department, where doctors tragically declared him dead on arrival.

Family Alleges Harassment

The incident has triggered massive tension on the hospital premises. Following the news of his death, Dr. Suresh’s mother, K. Nagamani, and other relatives staged a protest near the mortuary demanding justice.

In her official police complaint at the Afzalgunj police station, his mother stated that she spoke to her son every single day. She has explicitly alleged that her son took this extreme step due to immense pressure, ragging, and harassment from senior students in the department, and she is demanding strict action against those responsible.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigating officer, M. Subash, confirmed that the police are currently probing the allegations of ragging. However, he also noted that preliminary findings suggest the young doctor had been battling depression for the past few days and was reportedly undergoing counseling. The police are currently recording statements from his classmates, hostel residents, and faculty members, while awaiting the forensic reports to determine the exact cause of death.
