SNMMCH Dhanbad: 5 MBBS Interns Injured in Violent Medical College Hostel Clash

The toxic culture within medical college hostels has taken another violent turn. A severe clash between two groups of MBBS interns at the Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH) in Dhanbad has left at least five junior doctors injured and prompted an immediate institutional probe.

The Hostel Altercation

According to reports confirmed by TOI, the incident occurred late on the night of April 15 inside the campus hostel. The students involved are currently undergoing their compulsory clinical internships after completing their core MBBS studies.

While the administration has not officially disclosed the exact trigger for the physical altercation, campus sources indicate that heavy tensions between the two specific groups of interns had been brewing for several days over past, unresolved disputes. What started as verbal hostility reportedly escalated into a full-blown physical fight, resulting in five interns sustaining injuries.

Administration Initiates Probe

The SNMMCH administration convened an emergency meeting on Thursday to address the violence. Principal Dr. R.K. Mahto confirmed the formation of a specialized inquiry committee to investigate the clash and identify all individuals involved.

“Strict action will be taken against the guilty based on the committee’s findings,” Dr. Mahto stated. “We have initiated an internal probe, and several students have already been questioned. The exact cause of the clash is yet to be ascertained.”

Authorities are currently reviewing hostel logs and recording statements to determine exactly how many students participated in the violence.

A Disturbing Trend

This incident is part of a deeply concerning trend of escalating violence and indiscipline within medical college hostels nationwide. It follows closely on the heels of severe physical ragging and harassment incidents reported recently at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) in Dehradun and the tragic hostel deaths in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. The continuous breakdown of discipline highlights the intense pressure-cooker environment of medical training and the urgent need for better conflict resolution and mental health interventions on campus.
