Hyderabad: PG Doctor Attacked Inside Niloufer Hospital ICU, Doctors Demand Action

A second-year postgraduate resident doctor at Niloufer Hospital was allegedly assaulted by attendants of a pediatric patient while on duty in the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) on the night of June 7, 2026 . According to accounts shared by the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA), the incident occurred after a child recovering from illness, who had earlier been shifted from the RICU to an isolation ward, began crying excessively. The resident doctor reportedly reassessed the patient, counselled the family, and later shifted the child back to the RICU for closer monitoring as a precautionary measure.

ICU Protocols Ignored, Doctor Allegedly Attacked

As per ICU safety protocols, the doctor requested that the patient’s attendants leave the restricted care area, allowing only the child’s mother to remain. However, five attendants, reportedly including two men and three women, entered the RICU and allegedly assaulted the resident doctor after refusing to comply with instructions. One of the patients inside the NICU said, “When the doctor asked the attendants to leave, they did not pay heed. When the doctor threatened to call the police, they vandalised a chair.” Amid chaos, doctors on duty could not immediately inform the police through the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) as the helpline was reportedly not working.

Junior Doctors Demand Criminal Action

The incident triggered strong reactions from resident doctors’ associations across Hyderabad. The Osmania Junior Doctors Association alleged that attempts to immediately alert law enforcement were hampered because the hospital’s emergency communication mechanism through the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) was reportedly non-functional at the time. Niloufer Hospital Superintendent DG Vijay Kumar said, “The incident occurred on Saturday, when the attendants alleged negligence by the doctor. We called the police, who pacified the attendants and asked them to leave the premises.”Junior doctors have demanded immediate registration of a criminal case against the accused and strict implementation of all applicable legal protections for healthcare workers.
