Odisha MBBS Student Death: OTAS Trainee Arrested for Abetting Suicide

The medical community in Odisha is reeling from the tragic loss of a 28-year-old third-year MBBS student, Chandrika Hembram. The Commissionerate Police in Cuttack have arrested a 29-year-old Odisha Tax and Accounts Service (OTAS) trainee, Bhimsen Prasad Tudu, on charges of abetting her suicide.

A Relationship Turned Tragic

Chandrika, a student at Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital in Balasore, was found dead in the Kathajodi river in Cuttack on June 4. According to her family, Chandrika and the accused were school friends who had been in a relationship for 14 years and planned to marry in 2027. However, the family alleges that after Tudu joined the administrative services, he distanced himself, backed out of their marriage plans, and began making taunts about her complexion.

The Investigation

Following a multi-state manhunt, police apprehended Tudu in Mayurbhanj district after he initially fled to Jharkhand. Investigators have seized digital evidence, including the accused’s laptop, tablet, and WhatsApp chat records. Authorities revealed that Chandrika attempted to contact Tudu multiple times on the day of her death, but her calls allegedly went unanswered.

While a post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as drowning and asphyxiation with no external injuries, Chandrika’s family continues to reject the suicide theory, alleging foul play and a planned murder involving the accused and another woman. The investigation is ongoing as police analyze the forensic and cyber evidence.
