Sagar Medical College: Woman Doctor Alleges Assault, JUDA Warns of Statewide Strike

A late-night emergency at Bundelkhand Medical College (BMC), Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, allegedly escalated into a serious assault on a woman doctor, reigniting concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals in India. According to police, a Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha state executive member, identified as Anil Srivastava alias Anil Pipra, along with an associate, has been booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after the doctor accused him of molestation, criminal intimidation, and threatening to shoot her inside the hospital premises. Police have confirmed that efforts are underway to arrest both accused.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 2, when a female patient was brought to the emergency department around 2 a.m. Hospital staff alleged that repeated phone calls regarding the patient’s treatment had already been made before her arrival. During treatment, two men accompanying the patient allegedly created a disturbance, misbehaved with doctors and nurses, and disrupted emergency services.

Doctor Alleges Molestation and Death Threat During Duty

According to the complaint, the situation escalated after the woman doctor objected to the men’s behaviour. She alleged that Anil Srivastava attempted to touch her inappropriately while she was performing her duties in the emergency ward. The doctor further claimed that after she resisted, the accused threatened to shoot her once she stepped outside the hospital premises,  leaving the medical staff shocked and fearing for their safety. Nursing personnel also accused the two men of intimidation, abusive behaviour, and obstructing healthcare delivery.

Additional Superintendent of Police Narendra Solanki confirmed that an FIR has been registered based on the doctor’s complaint and stated that police are conducting raids to apprehend the accused. Meanwhile, BJP Yuva Morcha state president Shyam Tailor said he would ascertain the facts before commenting publicly on the allegations.

Doctors Protest, Emergency Services Hit

The alleged assault triggered immediate outrage among doctors, resident doctors, and nursing staff at Bundelkhand Medical College. Healthcare workers suspended services for several hours, staged demonstrations, and blocked the hospital’s main entrance while demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. The protest disrupted routine medical services and delayed emergency care, affecting patients and attendants visiting the government medical college.

Doctors further alleged that despite promptly informing hospital authorities and police after the incident, the accused managed to leave the campus before any decisive action was taken. Hospital staff also claimed that security personnel escorted the accused and attendants outside the premises before police intervention, raising fresh questions over institutional response during emergencies involving violence against healthcare workers.

JUDA Issues Statewide Strike Warning

Following assurances from senior police and administrative officials, the protest was temporarily withdrawn. However, the Madhya Pradesh Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) warned that if the accused are not arrested within 24 hours,  junior doctors across the state would launch a statewide work boycott. The association described the incident as another reminder that hospitals remain unsafe workplaces, particularly for women doctors working night shifts.

Medical associations have repeatedly argued that despite multiple incidents of assault, harassment, and intimidation against healthcare workers across India, implementation of effective security measures remains inconsistent. The Sagar incident has once again intensified demands for stricter enforcement of laws protecting healthcare professionals and stronger hospital security protocols, especially during night duties and emergency services.
