Violence at AIIMS Bhubaneswar: RDA Demands Strict Action After Mob Assaults Doctors Over Patient Death
The epidemic of violence against healthcare workers has once again reared its ugly head, this time breaching the highly secured premises of an apex central institute. A massive mob of angry patient attendants went on a violent rampage at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, brutally assaulting resident doctors and forcing female nursing officers to lock themselves in a room for survival.
The Incident
The horrifying incident unfolded over the weekend inside Ward D+6 of the hospital following the death of a patient. According to preliminary reports, the deceased, identified as Shiv Shankar Behera, had been admitted for treatment after consuming poison. Accusing the medical staff of negligence, a group of aggressive attendants suddenly turned violent, targeting the on-duty healthcare workers.
What began as an altercation quickly escalated into a full-blown physical assault. When an intern bravely attempted to shield the nursing staff from the attackers, the mob turned on him. In a press release, the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) detailed the gruesome assault, stating that the young doctor was repeatedly struck on his head, neck, and back. During the violent scuffle, his scrubs were torn, and his stethoscope was broken.
The chaos spread rapidly. A second intern suffered a foot injury while desperately trying to escape the mob, while a third was subjected to death threats and severe verbal abuse.

A Complete Security Collapse
The extent of the security failure inside the premier institute was staggering. The mob brazenly forced their way into the nursing station, creating widespread panic. Terrified female nursing officers and junior residents were forced to abandon their posts and barricade themselves inside the nurses’ room to escape the physical violence. Shockingly, the attackers also managed to forcibly snatch away the deceased patient’s medical file from the staff.
Police Action and RDA’s Ultimatum
A disturbing video of the mob surrounding and assaulting the doctor quickly went viral on social media, prompting massive outrage from the medical fraternity. Acting swiftly on the escalating tension, the Khandagiri Police launched an immediate crackdown, rounding up and detaining more than ten youths allegedly involved in the brutal assault.
However, the AIIMS Bhubaneswar RDA is demanding much more than temporary detentions. The association has urged the hospital administration and law enforcement to register a formal FIR and initiate stringent legal action against every single perpetrator. Warning of a potential shutdown, the RDA stated that their repeated demands for better security have gone unaddressed, and if immediate action is not taken this time, they will be forced to launch stronger protests.

It is completely unacceptable that doctors and nurses working at a premier central institute like AIIMS are forced to barricade themselves in rooms just to survive a shift. Mob justice over a tragic clinical outcome is not an expression of grief; it is criminal assault. When attendants can effortlessly breach a nursing station, physically beat an intern, and steal a medical file, the hospital’s security apparatus has fundamentally failed. The police must ensure these detentions lead to strict convictions to send a clear message: the safety and dignity of healthcare workers are non-negotiable.
