MGM Indore: PG Resident Dr. Simmi Yadav Critical After Suicide Attempt via Insulin Overdose
The toxic culture of medical residency in India has claimed another victim of severe mental distress. A first-year postgraduate junior resident at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College in Indore attempted suicide on Saturday morning following relentless alleged harassment by her senior doctors.
The distressing incident has led to an immediate administrative shakeup at the institution, bringing the dark realities of extreme shift hours and workplace bullying to the forefront.
36-Hour Shifts and Coordinated Harassment
The victim, Dr. Simmi Yadav, a first-year PG student in the Gynaecology department originally from Sagar, was stationed at the MTH Hospital. According to her initial complaints, the root of the harassment stemmed from inhumane working hours.
Dr. Yadav was initially forced by seniors to work continuous 36-hour shifts, during which she was burdened with non-academic tasks such as ferrying patients and delivering medical samples. When she formally protested against these grueling conditions, her shifts were reduced to 12 hours, but this reportedly triggered severe retaliatory behavior. She alleged that four seniors—Dr. Yashaswi, Dr. Nikita Gurbani, Dr. Shweta, and Rajveer—formed a clique to systematically target and publicly humiliate her over her clinical work and handwriting.
The Tragic Step and Distress Message
Unable to bear the continuous mental torture, Dr. Yadav consumed a severe overdose of insulin in her MGM Girls’ hostel room on Saturday morning. As her condition deteriorated, she was rushed to Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital, where she is currently fighting for her life in critical condition.
Before taking the extreme step at 6:37 AM, she sent a heartbreaking WhatsApp message to her brother and a friend: “This is the worst life, I don’t want to live. All seniors are toxic, especially Nikita Gurbani and Shweta. Please get their degrees cancelled, they are taking signatures against me”.
According to reports from Dainik Bhaskar and further corroborated by the Free Press Journal, the Sanyogitaganj police have initiated a probe under TI K.P. Yadav. While the victim’s mother and brother have recorded their statements, Dr. Yadav remains unconscious, delaying her official police testimony.
HOD Removed Amidst Outrage
Following immense pressure and outrage over the incident, the MGM Medical College management took immediate administrative action. The Head of the Gynaecology Department, Dr. Nilesh Dalal, has been removed from his post for failing to intervene, and the departmental charge has been handed over to Dr. Anupama Dave. Meanwhile, Dean Dr. Arvind Ghanghoriya has maintained silence on the matter.

The Bottom line
The tragic suicide attempt by Dr. Simmi Yadav at MGM Indore is a devastating reminder that the deeply rooted toxicity in Indian medical education remains largely unchecked. Forcing a first-year resident to work 36-hour shifts and then systematically bullying her for protesting is not clinical training, it is workplace abuse. The fact that an HOD had to be removed highlights the administrative complicity that allows such cliques to thrive. The NMC’s anti-ragging policies mean absolutely nothing if junior doctors are driven to inject themselves with insulin just to escape the mental torture of their seniors. Immediate criminal action, not just internal suspension, is required to set a precedent.
