Woman Doctor Molested Outside NRS Medical College Hostel in Kolkata; Four Arrested

A woman doctor has alleged that she was molested and harassed by a group of outsiders near the ladies’ hostel at NRS Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, during the early hours of Saturday, June 27, 2026.

According to the complaint, a group of allegedly intoxicated men gathered outside the hostel around 3 a.m., shouted abusive remarks, played loud music, made obscene gestures, and attempted to draw the attention of women residing inside the hostel. The complainant alleged that she was subjected to molestation and harassment during the incident, raising alarming questions about the ease with which outsiders were able to access a government medical college campus despite existing security arrangements.

The doctor immediately alerted hostel authorities, who informed the police. CCTV footage from the campus reportedly captured several youths arriving on motorcycles and loitering near the hostel before fleeing when police were called. Investigators subsequently reviewed surveillance footage from both the hospital premises and surrounding areas, leading to the identification of the accused.

Four Arrested, But Doctors Question Campus Security and Administrative Accountability

Based on the doctor’s complaint and evidence collected during the investigation, Kolkata Police arrested four individuals in connection with the case. They have been identified as Pappu Das, Pappu Ram, Bhola Das and Kishan Kumar. NRS Medical College Principal Dr. Indira Dey said, “An FIR has been lodged and police have taken action. Any such complaint will be reported to the police immediately for necessary legal action. This will not be tolerated.”

Hospital officials described the incident as unacceptable and acknowledged that complaints regarding outsiders loitering near women’s hostels, including incidents of catcalling and stone-pelting, had surfaced previously. Officials reportedly stated that the latest incident became particularly serious because the accused allegedly entered the hospital premises, exposing significant vulnerabilities in campus security.

The complainant also questioned how outsiders could repeatedly gather so close to the ladies’ hostel despite security personnel being deployed on campus. Hospital authorities reportedly believe the accused are residents of a nearby slum. Officials identified a gate near the mortuary, which is intended to remain closed during evening hours, as a potential security weak point allegedly being used by unauthorised individuals to access the campus. The administration has stated that it is reviewing security arrangements and campus access protocols following the incident.

The recurrence of such incidents at government medical institutions has once again intensified demands from resident doctors and professional bodies for comprehensive security audits across teaching hospitals, particularly those housing women residents. The medical community has repeatedly maintained that hospitals must be treated as protected workplaces where doctors can provide patient care without fearing harassment, violence, or threats to personal safety.
