Dr. Harsh Pandya Suicide Case: 4 Senior Doctors Suspended at GMC Surat
heartbreaking news emerged after a 29-year-old postgraduate medical student died by suicide at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Surat.
Dr. Harsh Pandya, a first-year MD Microbiology student, was found dead in his hostel room on Sunday, August 9, 2026. His tragic death has exposed a severe ragging culture and blatant faculty apathy within the institution.
Immediate Suspensions & Evictions
Following complaints from Dr. Pandya’s father and nine junior doctors, a high-level anti-ragging committee launched a marathon overnight investigation. The committee was co-chaired by Dean Dr. Jayesh Brahmbhatt and Medical Superintendent Dr. Parul Vadgama.
The committee found four seniors guilty of serious negligence and misconduct. The suspended second-year resident doctors are:

Dr. Anuj Maheshwari
Dr. Dikshita Ghevariya
Dr. Hina Bhut
All four doctors have been suspended for six months and ordered to vacate the PG hostel immediately.
They are strictly barred from participating in any academic activities.

Shocking Details of Harassment
The probe revealed a deeply toxic daily routine in the Microbiology department.
Dr. Pandya and nine other juniors were repeatedly subjected to mental harassment, verbal abuse, and indecent behavior.
The senior residents allegedly confined the first-year doctors to a room every evening.
The juniors were systematically harassed for one to one-and-a-half hours daily.
Faculty Apathy: “You Are a Newlywed Bride”
The most disturbing revelation is that the faculty knew about the abuse. First-year students approached two faculty members to complain on Friday evening, just two days before Dr. Pandya’s death.
Instead of stopping the ragging, the faculty allegedly failed to take the matter seriously. One faculty member shockingly dismissed the students’ distress, telling them, “Aap log nai naveli dulhan ho, ye sab face karna padta hai” (You are a newly wed bride, you have to face all this).
Due to this massive administrative failure, show-cause notices have been issued to four faculty members:
