Meet Dr Lakshmi Bai, A Retired Gynaecologist, Who Donated 3.4cr To AIIMS Bhubaneshwar Days Before Her 100th Birthday

This extraordinary act of philanthropy comes just days before her 100th birthday on December 5, 2025.

Dr. K. Lakshmi Bai, a 99-year-old retired professor and gynecologist donated ₹3.40 Crore to the AIIMS Bhubaneswar (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar).

The funds are specifically earmarked to establish a Gynaecologic Oncology (Women’s Cancer) center and program. She expressed a wish for the money to help poor and destitute women who often die due to a lack of affordable cancer treatment.

She also donated ₹3 Lakh to the Berhampur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society to fund HPV vaccination drives for adolescent girls to prevent cervical cancer.

About Dr. K. Lakshmi Bai

• Background: Born in 1926, she was a student of the first MBBS batch (1945) at SCB Medical College, Cuttack.

• Career: She served as a government doctor for over 35 years and retired as a Professor from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, in 1986.

• Personal Life: She resides in Berhampur, Odisha. Being a widow with no children, she considers the patients she helps as her legacy.
