BRD Medical College Gorakhpur: MBBS Students Accused of Assaulting Psychiatric Patient

In a deeply disturbing incident highlighting a severe breakdown in campus discipline and patient handling, a group of MBBS students at Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur has been accused of severely assaulting a psychiatric patient within the campus premises.

The Incident Near Sarojini Hostel

According to reports from Dainik Bhaskar, the incident unfolded on Sunday, April 19 when a patient admitted to the college’s psychiatric ward wandered out of the facility. The patient, who happens to be the husband of a staff nurse working at the same college, reportedly reached the Sarojini Hostel area and made an inappropriate comment regarding the clothing of a passing female MBBS student.

Following the comment, the student immediately called her classmates. A large group of MBBS students quickly gathered outside the hostel, where they allegedly dragged the psychiatric patient and subjected him to a severe physical beating.

Staff Nurse Filmed the Assault

The patient’s wife, who was present at the scene during the altercation, desperately pleaded with the students to stop the assault, explicitly informing them that her husband was a diagnosed psychiatric patient undergoing active treatment. When her pleas were ignored, she began filming the entire incident on her phone.

College security eventually intervened, rescuing the patient and re-admitting him to the psychiatric ward. However, the situation escalated further when the group of students later entered the ward and allegedly threatened the staff nurse, demanding she delete the video footage of the assault.

The Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) had to intervene personally to bring the volatile situation under control. Local police have stated that, as of now, no formal written complaint has been filed regarding the incident.
