GMCH Nagpur Shock: 26-Year-Old Resident Doctor Found Dead in Hotel Room
In a heartbreaking incident, Dr. Ritwik Sagar Thakur, a 26-year-old first-year postgraduate student (Ophthalmology) at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, was found dead on the morning of Monday, February 2, 2026. He was discovered hanging in a hotel room in Ganeshpeth, where he was staying temporarily as he waited for a hostel allotment.
Dr. Ritwik, a native of Buldhana, was a meritorious student who had completed his MBBS from the prestigious KEM Hospital, Mumbai. He had joined the residency program at GMCH Nagpur just six days prior (on January 27). When he failed to report for duty on Monday morning, his department head alerted the authorities, leading to the discovery of his body.
The police have confirmed death due to asphyxiation and have ruled out foul play. Notably, no suicide note was found. The Resident Doctors’ Association (MARD) conducted a preliminary check and stated that given his very short tenure (less than a week), there was no evidence of workplace harassment or toxicity from seniors. Police are currently investigating other angles, including personal stress or difficulty adjusting to the relocation.
