RGUHS Exam Result Dispute: Division Bench Bans Re-Evaluation of Answer Papers
In a major legal reversal, the Karnataka High Court has firmly ruled against the re-evaluation of answer scripts for medical students who failed their university examinations.
As reported by The Indian Express and Medical Dialogues, a division bench officially set aside an earlier single-judge order that had allowed failed Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) papers to be sent to a third, independent evaluator.
The Core Issue
The dispute involved students who secured the required 50% overall aggregate (200 out of 400 marks) across four theory papers but failed to meet the minimum 40-mark passing threshold in one specific subject. The single judge had initially allowed a re-evaluation to ensure “substantial justice.”

The Division Bench Reversal
The University successfully challenged this order. The division bench ruled that judicial interference in academic grading is “impermissible” unless there is a proven bias or manifest error in the evaluation process.
Citing university ordinances, the court emphasized that the average score from two evaluators is final and further re-evaluation is strictly prohibited. The bench concluded that failing by a few marks is not an “exceptional circumstance” that warrants court intervention purely out of sympathy.
